Hydrogen is an environmentally friendly fuel because it does not produce carbon dioxide. We are working hard to adapt the ECU to control hydrogen fuel vehicle engines. When using hydrogen as fuel, the hydrogen/air equivalence ratio should be matched with low torque to achieve complete combustion without any hydrogen or air remaining. However, at high torque, by pressing excess air into the engine, it is best for the engine to operate at a lean fuel mixture ratio, which is also known as the lean combustion principle.
In order to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, the engine should not operate in a moderate proportion of fuel/air mixture. In this control strategy, we continuously open the throttle and use a high air/fuel equivalence ratio to control the required torque by changing the fuel quantity. However, when the required torque is greater than what lean combustion can provide, we must switch to controlling the throttle and switch between the two control strategies. Currently, apart from the BMW Hydrogen 7 engine control system, there are no other commercially available engine control systems that can switch between these two control strategies. We plan to use CompactRIO to implement an ECU to switch our control scheme and provide commercially available systems to interested third parties.
