The emergence of new fuels and more efficient fuel usage will reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and maximize fuel utilization, thereby providing power to engines in a more sustainable way. Several ECUs extract data from revolutions per minute (rpm), issue torque/throttle position or push pressure requests for turbocharged engines, and determine the optimal ignition time or time period, as well as the optimal fuel injection amount and time. We also use additional parameters (such as engine temperature) to correct these parameters. For example, a cold engine requires more fuel mixture than an engine operating at normal operating temperature.
At present, ready-made programmable ECUs are not suitable for research because their programming capabilities are limited, and they use a series of predefined input variables (sensors). We have designed a very flexible and programmable engine management system using a CompactRIO programmable automation controller. The platform is modular, expandable with additional sensors, and includes a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). With FPGA, the system can respond quickly and support the use of LabVIEW graphical programming. Additionally, due to our previous research projects, engineers have gained experience in using graphical programming.
