Gas production is measured in direct proportion to the effectiveness and efficiency of the digester process itself. The amount of gas sent to the engine is then the key control variable if the collected gas is used as a fuel in a cogeneration or CHP system. In addition, if any gas is released or flared, as both methane and carbon dioxide are known to be polluting greenhouse gases (GHGs), local environmental regulations often require that the amount of gas released or flared be reported. Since CH 4 is a flammable, potentially explosive gas, the instrument should have an agency approval certificate for Div.1/Zone 1 HazEx installation. If the meter is to be installed before the gas is dry/cleaned or not at all, the engineer must also consider the success of measuring S deposits in wet gas, blockage or fouling of orifices or moving parts due to H 2 , and the cost and convenience of regular cleaning to remove H 2 S residues.
