Eight state sequence programming (plc like functions) Sequence programming is a standard feature in ABB’s general purpose mechanical drives and provides a simple way to create pre-set sequences of operations without any drive options. These plc like programmes are sufficient for many basic applications where the drive controls the motor via sensor signals and limit switches. This helps to reduce the need for external PLC capacity and facilitates the reduction of complex motor control systems, reducing costs. Additional programming features include speed-compensated stops and programmable delayed stops – ideal for material handling applications that require precise stopping independent of changes in process speed.

Flexible user interface The user interface of the new Universal Mechanical Drives has also been designed to give the user greater flexibility and the potential to reduce costs. The control panel is for commissioning or troubleshooting only and is not included as part of the standard drive. Users requiring a panel can choose between two types: basic and auxiliary. Both are removable, so the end user gets a single panel to swap between multiple drives and use across multiple drives.

At the same time, the drives are extremely compact: with more than 1 hp, the 480V drives are the smallest available in their category. And only the width of the drive increases with power, which makes it easy to install into cabinets or stand-alone configurations. Cable tunnels can be set in straight lines and all screw holes can be drilled in straight lines. 15 hp 480V units are available in the same standard R3 frame. Mounting of the 15 hp unit is also available and the drives can be mounted side by side without air gap. When the depth of the cabinet is very limited, the drives can even be mounted on one side to the back of the cabinet. Since the 15 HP version weighs only 5.5 lbs, handling and mounting these units is easy. The drives offer IP20 protection in their own housing.
