Description

ABB ICSE08B5 Extended Range Digital DC Drives

ABB ICSE08B5 Extended Range Digital DC Drives up to 2250 Ampere The PLX range of drives is ideal for controlling DC motors used in heavy industrial applications such as metal processing, steel mills, mining, or the cement, rubber and plastics industries. Under braking, PLX drives are able to feed energy back to the power supply. With current ratings of up to 2250 amps at supply voltages up to 690 volts, the motor controllers are designed to be compact, powerful, flexible and easy to program thanks to drive network control technology.

The ABB ICSE08B5 is available as a two-quadrant or renewable four-quadrant type DC drive using the PLX range. The four-quadrant model uses two thyristor bridges enabling it to rotate and brake in both directions. This makes it possible to reverse the torque to slow the load very gently while regenerating energy. Unlike AC drives, it is able to generate full torque at zero speed, allowing the load to be held steady in complete safety without the need for mechanical braking, a particularly useful feature for winches and hoists. This means that DC is also ideal for applications such as mixers, extruders and rollers that require high starting torque and precise control at low or zero speed, as well as paper machines, wire drawing and converting.

The ABB ICSE08B5 is available from 650 to 2250 amps (980 kW/1320 hp) and offers a choice of two AC bus positions, either top or bottom entry. Both options make it easier to use existing wiring in retrofit installations or provide wiring options for new designs. This range can be achieved with either a high voltage (690V AC) or standard voltage (480V AC) model. A 690V AC power supply allows the use of 750V DC thermal motors. Compared to the standard voltage, this increases the shaft power up to 1500 kW/2000 hp for the 2250A model. This means a 50 per cent increase in power supply without increasing cable size.
